The School Education Crisis Continues

The NAPLAN results released today show that one in seven Year 9 boys is semi-illiterate.

This is on top of the data last week showing that 50,000 Year 7 students in Australia start high school without being able to read properly.

How can this be in a school system with record government funding?

The students have not learnt because the teachers have not taught.

And Education Ministers have done nothing to stop political junk and fad reading programs from dominating our classrooms.

The evidence is clear: every student should be able to read if the teachers teach synthetic phonics and target the under-achieving students for special recovery assistance.

It’s a crime against our young people that this has not happened.
